Robert Jon McCarthy
Robert started racing bikes early at age 10 and had a lot of success taking national titles in both Ireland and Australia through the junior ranks. His early performances saw him become a member of the South Australian Institute of Sport, where he raced both on the track and road and represented Australia the Youth Commonwealth games ( Taking 3 Gold medals) and the Junior World Road Race Championships ( Where he helped Caleb Ewan to silver)
During his years in the u23 category he gained invaluable experience with AIS/National u23 squad competing in many of the nations cups and prestigious one day events such as the u23 Tour of Flanders and u23 Paris Roubaix.
He now has a professional career spanning 5 years, with teams An Post CRC, SEG racing and currently the JLT Condor team, where he has rubbed shoulders with the worlds best in races such as Belgian classic Kurne-Brussels-Kurne and picking up victories in Australia's Herald Sun Tour and the Ras in Ireland.
Being keen follower and student of sport science on top of his extensive education via the sport both as a professional and as a member of the Australian Institute of Sport, working with world leaders in physiology, training, diet etc has given him the depth of knowledge to provide his athletes with world class coaching.
Ian began his cycling career off road in the cyclocross and MTB as a schoolboy, in the junior ranks he became a member of the Olympic Development program and took his first British cyclocross championship.
As he progressed into the u23 ranks he joined the well known British cycling Academy program which has seen the likes of Mark Cavendish, Ed Clancy, Geraint Thomas and many other current stars come through. On the MTB Ian took out the u23 XC national champs and placed top ten in the European MTB Championships behind current Olympic Gold Medalist, Nino Schurter. Ian began his professional road career with the Halfords team and continued to pick up national titles winning the British Elite Cyclocross Championships.
Ian decided to focus his attention solely on being a professional road cyclist and has since had a terrific near decade long career with teams, Motorpoint Pro Cycling, Ednura racing, Maddison Genesis, NFTO and now JLT Condor. He has taken victories in all of the major events on the UK calendar such as The Chorley GP, Lincoln GP, Veleton Wales and can boast massive international wins such as the Bay Criterium series in Australia, stages in the Ras in Ireland and Mi-Aout Bretagne in France and very recently took a Stage win and 2nd place overall at the New Zealand Cycling Classic in January 2018.
Ian's long career as a road pro, being a member of the British Cycling program where he learned from the best coaches & trainers in cycling as well as his success on the MTB and cross bikes has given him the skills and knowledge to coach across multiple disciplines.
